Corning announces Gorilla Glass 3D for smartphones with curved displays and wearables

Photo: Corning announces Gorilla Glass 3D for smartphones with curved displays and wearables Just in time for CES, Gorilla Glass maker Corning has announced it can now make the popular protective glass in 3D shapes. With this solution Corning aims to to pre-empt the trend of curved displays in smartphones like we have seen from Samsung and LG. However, a bigger market could be that of wearables, especially high-end smartwatches that are yet to come. In the press release Corning mentions, “Corning’s 3D-forming technology can achieve precise tolerances and high throughput on a platform that is more economical than alternative two-mold forming methods. This technology uses Gorilla Glass of uniform thickness, assisting designers to introduce thinner and lighter devices and leverage the emergence of conformable displays for mobile and wearable applications.” The announcement of 3D Gorilla Glass would be of immense importance, especially for smartwatch makers as a better and understandably cheaper alternative to using a sapphire glass in their smartwatches. With a certain company long rumored to be making a smartwatch with a curved glass display, it is quite possible we won’t have to wait for much longer to see the first product using this new technology.

China pledges further support for solar industry

China pledges further support for solar industry

China pledged further support for its ailing solar power industry on Saturday as the government seeks to revive a sector struggling with overcapacity and falling prices.

The State Council, China's cabinet, said in July that the country aimed to more than quadruple solar power generating capacity to 35 gigawatts by 2015 in an apparent bid to ease a glut in the domestic solar power industry.

The State Council, in a statement published on its website, said the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology was taking measures to "promote the healthy development of the photovoltaic industry".

The ministry, it said, was implementing the July directive by supporting consolidation in the industry, drafting guidelines for mergers and acquisitions and promoting standardization.

It said the ministry was encouraging technological innovation, especially related to decentralized solar power installations not connected to the power grid. It was also supporting research and development efforts for batteries that can store solar electricity.

The ministry sought to improve standardization and ensure "orderly competition" in the industry, the statement said.

The State Council said the solar industry had enjoyed a recovery in 2013. Total installed solar power generating capacity increased by around 8 GW, of which 6 GW were in power plants and 2 GW were in decentralized instillations, the statement said, citing preliminary estimates from the China Photovoltaic Industry Alliance.

Still, Chinese solar equipment producers LDK Solar Co Ltd and JA Solar Holdings Co Ltd are teetering on the edge of bankruptcy.

China's support for its solar industry has been a source of trade friction. The United States and European Union have accused China of dumping underpriced solar panels on foreign markets and China has responded with anti-subsidy duties of its own.

Lenovo’s big 2014 smartphone push starts off with a bang

Photo: Lenovo’s big 2014 smartphone push starts off with a bang Late last year, Lenovo announced that it would be charging into 2014 with a new smartphone strategy that might give the company a much-needed competitive edge. Lenovo didn’t waste any time either— four new smartphones were unveiled on Thursday, each of which will see an international release this year. First up is the Vibe Z, Lenovo’s premiere LTE-enabled smartphone. The Vibe Z features a 5.5-inch, 1080p display, 2.2GHz Snapdragon 800 processor, 2GB of RAM, up to 16GB of internal storage, 13-megapixel rear camera and Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. The Vibe Z will be available in February at select markets for $549 (Rs 34,200 approximately). Lenovo also plans to launch two phones in its S series: the S930 and the S650. The S930 will be Lenovo’s largest entry, with a display measuring in at 6-inches, although its 720p resolution won’t match that of the Vibe Z. Of course, neither will its price. The S930 starts at $319 (Rs 19,800 approximately), and its 4.7-inch relative, the S650, will cost just $229 (Rs 14,200 approximately). Both handsets will come equipped with 8GB of internal storage, 8-megapixel cameras and Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. The last of Lenovo’s new phones is also its most affordable. The A859 is “designed for great all around performance” and comes in at just $219 (Rs 13,650 approximately) with a 720p display, 8GB of storage, 8-megapixel camera and Android 4.2. The S930, S650 and A859 are all available immediately in countries where Lenovo smartphones are sold.

One more new revolution of india

As countdown begins, feverish work is underway at India's space port in Andhra Pradesh's Sriharikota as the Indian Space Research Organization or ISRO prepares for a landmark launch of its heavy rocket, the Geo-synchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV). The rocket had suffered a spectacular back-to-back failure three years ago forcing the abortion of the launch at the last minute.

For the second time, India will be using an Indian-made cryogenic engine while launching the advanced communications satellite. In its last attempt in August, it had a near-fatal mishap when a fuel leak was detected in the nick of time and the launch stopped an hour before liftoff.

ISRO scientists had found to their horror that about 750 kilograms of highly inflammable and explosive fuel had actually leaked out from the second stage.

"We have had a mixed bag of results of the GSLV in the earlier seven flights. All necessary corrections have been done on the GSLV and the cryogenic engine now we have now done our best expect it to be successful flight," K Radhakrishnan, Chairman, ISRO told NDTV.

If all goes well, this trial by fire could mark the first steps towards India's entry into the multi-billion dollar commercial launcher market on a fully indigenous large rocket. A sophisticated new Indian technology called the cryogenic engine will be flown for the second time.

The India-made Geo-synchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle powers the rocket, standing almost 50 meters tall - as high as a 17-storey building - and weighing 415 tons or as much 80 full grown elephants.

It is a three-stage rocket.

At liftoff, the first stage ignites using one of the world's largest solid fuel motors. The first stage separates and the second stage powered by a liquid engine takes over while the heat shield is shed.

At about 130 kilometers above the earth, the second stage separates and the all-important cryogenic engine takes over. Using cold liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen as fuel, the engine helps launch heavier satellites into space. After a 17-minute flight the satellite is expected to be put into its designated orbit above earth.

India's larger rocket has had only two successful flights; this will be the eight time it is being flown in 13 years. Four years ago on April 15, 2010, a disaster struck the GSLV program on when an India-made cryogenic engine failed.

Then on Christmas Day the same year, a rocket was destroyed in mid-air as ISRO lost its control.

In these four years, ISRO has built new facilities to test the cryogenic engine, redesigned some of the crucial components and has finally mustered courage to have another go. It took India more than 20 years to develop this cryogenic engine technology which was denied to India.

The Rs. 350-crore mission, which will hoist a sophisticated experimental communications satellite, is a gentle reminder that space remains a risky business and that denial of technology failed to work against India.

Toyota makes Fuel Cell Vehicle star of CES 2014

Toyota makes Fuel Cell Vehicle star of CES 2014
While other automakers highlight autonomous car technologies at CES 2014, Toyota will be taking a different tack. The company will use the venue to show off its latest Fuel Cell Vehicle concept car.
Fuel cell vehicles combine pure hydrogen with air to create water, a reaction that also produces electricity. The fuel cell channels the electricity to a drive motor, powering the car.
Many automakers had active fuel cell research programs a decade ago, but their efforts went quiet as battery electric vehicles became the rage. A fuel cell vehicle is essentially an electric car, with the advantage that hydrogen tanks take much less time to fill than a battery does to recharge. Toyota notes that the Fuel Cell Vehicle concept it will show at CES 2014 can go 310 miles, and takes just 3 minutes to refill with hydrogen.
Toyota released few performance figures about its Fuel Cell Vehicle concept's performance, but writes that continuing development of its fuel cell vehicle stack has led to an output of 10 kilowatt-hours from two 10,000-psi hydrogen tanks. That Toyota would use the Fuel Cell Vehicle concept as the star of its CES 2014 presence shows a commitment to the technology, underlined by the company's statement that it will put a fuel cell production vehicle on the road near 2015. The development in this area also suggests Toyota is not convinced battery technology will advance to quicker recharge times or greatly enhanced capacity anytime soon.
The Fuel Cell Vehicle concept is a funny-looking thing, even stranger than the Prius. However, its design is supposed to reflect the idea of air, at the front of the car, being turned into water. Like other fuel cell vehicles, this concept emits water vapor as its waste product.

Nearly all cars to be autonomous by 2050

Well, fellow humans, we're going to obsolete soon. A new study by IHS Automotive claims that by 2025, a mere 11 years from now, there will be 230,000 self-driving cars on world's roads. 10 years beyond that, the number will swell to 11.8 million, although only select models will do without any traditional means of human control by 2030. By the middle of the 21st century, nearly every vehicle on the road will be of the autonomous variety.

Now, this may only be a study, but it's one that we think may hold some water. Multiple traditional manufacturers are embarking on autonomous-vehicle projects, and they're being joined by the likes of tech giant Google along with any number of major industry suppliers.

As for what these numbers will mean for the industry, IHS is only predicting self-driving cars to make up two-tenths of a percent of sales in 2025, with price premiums of $7,000 to $10,000. By 2035, 9.2-percent of new vehicles sold will be autonomous, as prices are driven down to a mere $3,000 more than a traditionally controlled vehicle.

The effects of self-driving cars on society, meanwhile, will be more mixed. According to the study, 90-percent of traffic deaths are due to driver error, which means we should see a reduction in fatalities once humans are taken out of the equation. The bad news is, humans who drive for a living – whether it be over-the-road truckers or your friendly UPS driver – are likely to be among the first redundancies as autonomous commercial vehicles become more common.

Provided the prices equalize and the technology becomes reliable, would you consider a self-driving or fully autonomous car? Let us know in Comments.

CES: Is Samsung already preparing to unveil the next Galaxy Gear?

Samsung’s first entry into the wearable tech market left a lot to be desired, but there’s never been any doubt that the company would come back swinging before too long. In fact, if Samsung Mobile UK’s Twitter feed is any indication, news of the follow-up to the Galaxy Gear might be right around the corner.
The tweet is fairly vague and is posed as a question to consumers that may or may not have been impressed by the Galaxy Gear last year, but it could be a sign that Samsung is ready to start talking about its next next big thing at CES next week. Rumors have already started springing up concerning the Galaxy Band, a fitness tracking device similar to Nike’s Fuel-band that would pair with other Samsung devices.

What’s more, there have already been reports that Samsung is looking to launch its Gear follow-up in the first quarter of 2014 alongside the Galaxy S5. Hopefully we will have a better sense of the company’s direction next week.

Controversial “Study” Finds That iPhone Users Are “Smarter”: Do you agree?

When it comes to choosing a smartphone platform, there are definitely stereotypes involved and that’s definitely a debate for another time, but according to a recent study, which is sure to raise a few eyebrows and spark some intense arguments, it seems that iPhone users are found to be smarter compared to other brands and platforms. This is a study conducted by British betting company, Ladbrokes. The test involved about 1,000 respondees where they were first asked which smartphone were they using, followed by a series of questions involving problem solving, pattern recognition, and other brain teasers. The results found that iPhone owners had the quickest wits and an average completion time of 94 seconds. Unfortunately it was found that BlackBerry users did the worst and were the slowest with a completion time of 118 seconds. Samsung users did slightly better with an average completion time of 103 seconds. Like we said this is a study bound to cause arguments and is pretty controversial, but it’s hardly a scientific study and as an Android user, I hardly found it to be offensive. One of the reasons the test should not be taken seriously is also because there is no penalty for wrong answers as users could simply keep clicking until they got the right one. In any case it’s just a fun quiz that you can use to poke fun at your BlackBerry friends with, depending on which platform you are using, and should definitely not be taken seriously

Is This LG's webOS TV?

Rumors have circulated for some time now about LG working on an open, webOS-powered smart TV. Now, a leaked image provides a glimpse at what that might actually look like. Evleaks has published this photo of the rumored LG webOS TV, which shows what the the webOS Cards interface might look like on-screen. It's not exactly the same as the Cards interface that appeared on the ill-fated webOS phones, but it is in some ways similar—particularly in the way it includes thumbnail overviews of apps and content.

The image hints that the TV could include apps for YouTube, Facebook, Skype, and Twitter, as well as LG's SmartShare service and some kind of web browser. The other alternative is, of course, that this is a mock-up and it doesn't quite paint an accurate picture of what we can expect from the new TV.

That said, there's no small chance that the webOS TV will be announced at next week's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. With some rumors suggesting it will run on a 2.2Ghz dual-core processor with 1.5GB of RAM, it could be something to look forward to. Let's wait and see! [Evleaks via Verge]

Hands-On With Coin, The Electronic Credit Card That Hopes To Declutter Your Wallet

There are a number of startups seeking to make our financial lives better, whether it be Simple helping users set budgets and goals or BillGuard to make them aware of fraudulent charges that show up on their credit cards. Then there’s Coin, which wants to create a sort of “one card to rule them all” solution to the problem of sifting through all our credit and debit cards.

The early response to Coin has been pretty overwhelming, with the company reaching its initial pre-order goal shortly after it went online. It’s kept pre-orders open since then, and you can still order a Coin for $50 plus $5 shipping on the company’s website( https://onlycoin.com/).

We got an early look at one of the electronic card’s prototypes and spoke with founder Kanishk Parashar, who showed us how Coin works. The card has a screen to see which card you’re using, a button to switch between cards, a dynamic stripe to actually make purchases, and a Bluetooth low energy chip to sync with your mobile phone.

The whole company’s premise is to simplify and improve people’s lives, and they will begin shipping hopefully this summer.

Defibrillator Toaster

Add some fun (or perhaps drama) to your morning routine with this defibrillator toaster by Shay Carmon. It’s pretty simple- place your toast in the tray, select your toasting level, and apply some pressure. Clear! Unfortunately, this is only a concept design for the time being. Fingers crossed that, sometime in the future, we’ll be able to shock our toast to life to our heart’s content.

A Mind-Controlled Exoskeleton Will Kick Off the 2014 World Cup

It won't be a superstar football player who takes the first kick of 2014's Football World Cup in Brazil. Nope, instead, it will be a teenager, paralysed from the waist down, who will use the world's most advanced mind-controlled exoskeleton to get things underway.

A small part of a large-scale international collaborative project called Walk Again, the exoskeleton technology in question supports the lower body, using brain activity to trigger movements in the suit. Brain waves are detected using electrodes on the scalp, beamed wirelessly to the exoskeleton, and processed into commands which produce movement.

That motion, however, will be complemented by feedback, to make the experience feel more natural. That means the suit will include sensors to monitor touch, temperature and forces on the suit, which will be fed back to the user via visual displays and vibrating motors. In theory, those same signals could be transmitted directly into the brain to allow the users to experience the suit as if it were part of them. But, one step at a time, right?

The wearer of the suit will be chosen from a small group which will be training in Brazil during the run-up to the World Cup. For now, they're using virtual exoskeletons, but will be trying the real thing well ahead of the first kick. [Duke via New Scientist]

Samsung’s latest Galaxy Camera gets faster processor, Android Jellybean, lighter body

Samsung’s Android-packing Galaxy Camera – the smart camera that launched this category for Samsung – is also getting a significant upgrade with the Galaxy Camera 2. Like the NX30, though, the updates have less to do with better images than they do with, well, just about everything else.

For starters, the Galaxy Camera 2 weighs 260 grams to the original’s 303 grams, while packing a 2,000mAh battery that’s a decent step up from the 1,650mAh battery in the original.

If you thought the original model felt a bit sluggish when running Android apps, the sequel should go a fair way toward fixing that, with twice the RAM (2GB) and a quad-core processor that’s clocked at a higher 1.6GHz. There’s also a newer (though not the newest) flavor of Android on board, in the form of Jellybean (4.3).

Plug in the side table

Unique products do not always owe their inimitability to embellished designs, backed up by a hefty budget; rather they are an upshot of innovative designing leading to practical or multifunctional usage. Designer Sung-Pil Hwang has come up with an innovative piece of furniture that the users can not only employ as a side table, but also plug it in to illuminate their bedrooms or living spaces. Hailed as the ‘Plug-in Side Table,’ the furniture flaunts an exceptional design in a milky white color. Apart from offering storage space for your books or magazines and other small objects, the side may possibly juice up your small electronic devices as well. You can’t ask for more from a side table!

The Hand Crank Emergency Charger

This is the charger that converts one minute of hand cranking into 30-second bursts of emergency power for a connected cell phone. Ideal for placing an essential call or sending a text when a cell phone’s battery is nearly depleted, its fluid operation provides the same crank-to-power efficiency as dynamos used in larger emergency radios.

Ford's New Solar-Powered Electric Car Is Its Own Rolling Power Grid

Watch the video: http://youtu.be/CvEhtqcbJ4U
Behold, the C-MAX Solar Energi Concept that Ford just unveiled. This beast is equipped with a rooftop 16-square-foot solar panel, built by Silicon Valley's SunPower, that charges a lithium-ion battery pack. It's meant to be paired with a solar canopy that beams sunlight directly onto the panel so that the car can charge in six or seven hours. As such, the car doesn't need to be plugged in and can operate completely off the grid.

Now, the design is not perfect. The car's range is only 21 miles—which is fine, if you want to use it once a day to drive to a nearby grocery store, but otherwise pretty annoying. Mike Tinskey, Ford's director of global vehicle electrification and infrastructure, told Quartz that the car "could be for the home, corporate campuses or developing countries where there is no grid." There's a gas engine, just in case.
What's encouraging about the C-MAX Solar Energi Concept is that it's a real thing that consumers might be able to buy. Ford's built the concept, but they're also spending this year doing research to see if the market could accomodate it. If nothing else, the car is a sign of things to come. At this point, we have everything from an engine-free electric car to charging stations built into manholes. It almost makes the Tesla look passé. Solar Impulse, the solar-powered plane that's scheduled to fly around the world next year, remains amazing, however. [Quartz]

HOME CONSTRUCTED ENTIRELY OUT OF GLASS

There’s nothing else quite like these two homes that were designed by Milan based design firm,Santambrogio. The Italian design duo created two homes that are entirely constructed of a blue hued glass– this even includes items like the bed frame. Each glass house is set in a complete opposite landscape, and the feeling that they both evoke is exquisite. They are immersed in the use of glass sheets as structural elements which they explain excludes the need of profiles or other supporting elements. Thus letting the eye wander free from distractions and otherwise impeding structural eyesores.Take a closer look at what the designers have accomplished without the use of steel or wood.
